David Harlan, regional vice president of Lowe’s announces that Lowe's will be a presenting sponsor of the 5th annual Fiesta Latinoamericana! sharing its exciting La Cancha soccer game. Fiesta Latinoamericana! is Dallas’ only cultural festival of the Americas and will be held on Sunday Oct 9, 2011 in the Dallas Arts District. Fiesta Latinoamericana is produced in partnership with the AT&T Performing Arts Center and the Guadalupe Cathedral. The free family event take place 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Flora Street between Pearl and Routh.

The Lowe's soccer fan experience, La Cancha Lowe's, will be one of the highlights in a festival that offers three stages of music and dance, plus interactive and hands-on activities for the entire family that revive vibrant artistic traditions. Built around the motif of a traditional plaza‚ Fiesta features strolling musicians, indigenous dancers and drummers, clowns and balloon vendors, food carts, a Dance Pavilion, Tortilleria and Piñata workshops, Parade of Nations, Children’s Activities Tent, a Principe y Princesa Competition, and sixty performing arts groups on three stages.

SOMALI FAMINE CRISIS FUNDRAISER

The Somalia Famine Crisis Fundraiser presented by Awdal Charity Services Inc. will be held at the BBQ Tonite at 2540 Old Denton Rd in Carrollton on Friday, August 19, 2011 at 7pm. Registration for the banquet is $20 at the door. In light of the Ramadan season, the Muslim community, as well as the public, is invited to donate to honour their duty to charity. An iftar dinner will be served at 8:30 pm and 100% of the proceeds will go towards the crisis.

The devastating drought behind the famine has crippled Somalia as it not only affects the economic and social aspects of the people, but it endangers their very lives. Awdal Charity Services has responded to the crisis and is providing an opportunity for the community to be a source of aid for Somalia. The dinner schedule is adjusted in accordance to Ramadan.

10th Annual ETHIOPIA DAY!

The 10th annual ETHIOPIA DAY, produced by the Mutual Assistance Association for the Ethiopian Community in Dallas/Forth Worth, is a unique celebration held in the Dallas metroplex. The free family event will be held Saturday September 3rd and Sunday September 4th, 2011 from 2:00 pm to 2:00 am in the Plano Center, 2000 East Spring Creek Plano, Texas 75074.

The ETHIOPIA DAY festival offers a variety of cultural and fashion shows as well as a whole range of sport activities, educational information and a lot of food, music, health and other workshops. The 5th annual Fiesta Latinoamericana!, in partnership with the AT&T Performing Arts Center, Guadalupe Cathedral, and the Dallas Black Dance Theater, is the only cultural festival of the Americas held in the Dallas metroplex. The free celebration will be held Sunday October 9, 2011 from 9 am till 7 pm in the Dallas Arts District, on Flora Street between Pearl and Routh. The Honorary Chair is Texas Representative Rafael Anchia. Confirmed sponsors include Fiesta Mart, Wells Fargo, BB&T Bank, H&R Block, McDavid Honda of Frisco, State Farm Insurance, Parker College of Chiropractic, the City of Dallas Office of Cultural Affairs, with numerous additional sponsors still to be announced.

The event offers three stages of music and dance, plus interactive and hands-on activities for the entire family that revive vibrant artistic traditions, and performances by dozens of outstanding local artists representing Chile, Argentina, Spain, El Salvador, Mexico, Venezuela, Brazil, and other Latino cultures. Built around the motif of a ‘traditional plaza’ the Fiesta features strolling musicians, indigenous dancers and drummers, clowns and balloon vendors, food carts, a Dance Pavilion and a Healthy Living Court. The festival also includes: Tortilleria and Pinata workshops, Parade of Nations, Children’s Activities Tent, and a Principe y Princesa Competition.

As a newly appointed member of the Advisory Committee for Trade Policy and Negotiations, Honorary Chair for Fiesta Latinoamericana! Rafael Anchia represents the new voice of a Latino Community. MUSLIM COMMUNITY CENTER FOR HUMAN SERVICES RECEIVES $100,000 GRANT FROM CONSORTIUM OF HOSPITALS, NORTH TEXAS

Richland Hills, TX - Hospital Corporation of America North Texas Division, in collaboration with Texas Health Resources and the Baylor and Methodist Health Systems has awarded a 3-year grant of $100,000 per year to the Muslim Community Center for Human Services (MCCHS) to help expand its medical services. The funding has enabled the MCCHS Al-Shifa Medical Clinic to hire a full time nurse practitioner and increase its operations to 6 days a week: Monday to Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM, and Saturday, 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM. With these extended hours, MCCHS anticipates that the clinic will experience significant patient growth, estimating at least 3000 patients will be served this year.

Founded in 1995 by psychiatrist, Dr. Basheer Ahmed, MCCHS is a non-profit organization, dedicated to providing no-cost or minimal cost health care, social and educational services to underserved persons in the DFW Metroplex, regardless of race, gender, ethnicity, culture or religion. Founder and Chair, Dr. Basheer Ahmed says, “Since its inception 16 years ago, MCC for Human Services, a 501C3 charitable organization, continues to meet the needs of uninsured and underinsured individuals and families. A team of twenty-two volunteer physicians has been providing primary care services at the MCC for Human Services Al-Shifa Medical Clinic. The clinic provides a vision clinic, a dental clinic, and diagnostic laboratory services for indigent patients at discounted rates and distributes thousands of dollars’ worth of donated medications to patients as needed, free of charge.”

“I want to thank the funding agencies for their support of MCC for Human Services to achieve its goal. The grants will allow MCC for Human Services to serve more people in the local community who desperately need. We sincerely thank our volunteer physicians and community donors for their support of this organization”, says Dr. Ahmed.

MCCHS also provides full-time family and mental health counseling services. It has also received a grant from the State of Texas, under the Victims of Crimes Act, to help provide direct services to victims of domestic violence; it runs a 24-hour hotline for crisis intervention, and immediate assistance for domestic violence and child abuse cases.
