NEW! African and Latino Events Calendars from DFW International

DFW International Community Alliance, creator of North Texas' online international events calendar at www.dfwinternational.org announces two new innovative events listings to serve the North Texas region. At www.dfwinternational.org/AfricanCalendar, the first and only African Events Calendar connects the 150,000 African immigrants from 22 nations who live in the DFW metroplex. The Latino Events Calendar at www.dfwinternational.org/LatinoCalendar includes cultural and educational events for Latin American residents who form more than 40% of the population in seven North Texas municipalities.

The organization's 2010 report used Census figures to indicate the growth of internationals across the region, and noted that 44% of DFW residents are New Americans, that 239 languages are used here, and that in 32% of our homes English is not the language spoken. The new events calendars serve the newcomers while also showcasing the DFW metroplex as an international center where the weekly entertainment menu includes global festivals, international films, visiting flamenco artists and East African drummers, salsa stars and Asian food tastings.

"DFW International created the new calendars in response to the many requests from our global community leaders who are looking for new ways to promote their exciting events. Coordinators for multicultural educational and arts organizations are welcome to post their global, interfaith, multicultural (including 'Texan' / 'Americana') activities on the DFW International calendar, where an average of 375 global activities appear each month. Activities posted on the new African and Latino Calendars calendars will also appear on the main calendar, which is delivered via email to 74,000 subscribers each Wednesday," says Anne Marie Weiss-Armush, the organizaton's founder and president. New subscribers may sign up for the weekly cultural bulletin by clicking on the CALENDAR link.

DFW INT'L PRODUCES THREE GUIDES for NEW AMERICANS

Dallas, TX - DFW International Community Alliance announces updates of three titles in their series of free Guides for New Americans. These new directories are made possible by the support of The Meadows Foundation, UPS, Citi, Verizon, AETNA and Pfizer. All three titles will be available at most north Texas public libraries within a few days. These directories, along with two other titles, are also available as downloads from the DFW International Community Alliance website at www.dfwinternational.org/resource_center/ .

The updated titles for 2010 are:
- Guide to Economical Health Services / Guia de Servicios Economicos para cuidar su salud (bilingual)
- Guide to English Classes (ESL) for Adults
- Guide to Scholarships for New Americans and Minorities (bilingual)

Dr. Elba Garcia, Mayor Pro Temp of the City of Dallas adds, "We must thank the DFW International Community Alliance for their foresight and determination in creating the series of Guides for New Americans. These directories help our residents help themselves, increasing family income through improved skills in English and access to college scholarships. I don't know of any similar program in any other metropolitan region!"

According to DFW International Community Alliance's 2010 report, 44% of North Texas residents are immigrants (foreign-born and their children), with one million immigrants moving here in the past 10 years. In 30% of the region’s homes, a language other than English is used, and a total of 239 different languages are spoken.

DFW International Community Alliance is the portal for global North Texas, a network of 1,600 of the region's ethnic and internationally-focused civic, community and educational organizations. Its mission is to build mutual understanding and respect by linking diverse international cultural communities. The organization promotes and links North Texas ethnic and immigrant groups through its website and cultural calendar at www.dfwinternational.org, that receives three million hits a month.

972-965-5727

Dear media friends,

MEETING TONIGHT - The Chilean community has called for a meeting tonight at 8pm in the Holiday Inn Express, Plano. The address is 700 East Central Pkwy.

CLUB CHILENO DFW - Dallas Morning News named Jose Vallejos as president of the Club Chileno. Actually, the organization has been inactive for several years, and attempts to form a Chilean Women's Association were also unsuccessful. A week ago a meeting was held and it seems that the club is being rebuilt; five minutes ago the webpage was updated with a list of board members that was not there yesterday.

BEST CONTACT - for the past two years the de facto leaders of the Chilean community have been Rosa Collao 214-718-6424 and Rene Cuevas (her husband) 214-718-5361, although they will humbly protest that this is not so. Rosi and Rene run a successful home health business, and are directors of Cantares Musical Ensemble, the best Latino folkloric musicians in the region, as well as Voces y Danzas de Chile, a large dance / music group.

HONORARY CONSUL - Dorothy Reid is unwell, and her associate Horacio Marrull, 214-526-3267, has been filling in.

We hope this information is helpful. If we can be of additional assistance, my cellphone is 972-965-5727.
Sincerely,
With an emphasis on fun and hands-on instruction, the Lone Star Uke Fest and Music Camp provides a variety of ways to make music in a friendly, and supportive environment. ”Coming to the Camp is an inexpensive and easy way to begin learning about the ukulele in the beginner classes or to improve skills in the more advanced classes. “Musicians find that joining a Ukulele Jam group helps build community, and makes people happy in these uncertain times”, said Noel Tardy owner of UkeLadyMusic.com, who is a performer, teacher, and Ukulele dealer in North Texas. “There is something appealingly light about it, (playing the Ukulele)”, said Jim Beloff, author of the book, The Ukulele: A Visual History. Beloff also remarks in an article by Allen Salkin, published August 8, 2008 in the New York Times:
“There is lightness and sweetness about the sound of a Ukulele, and it doesn’t hurt that the association people have is with Hawaii, which is a beautiful place. It’s kind of a vacation in your mind.” Come to the Lonestar Ukulele Festival, and take a vacation with us the weekend of April 29 - May 1.
ENCORE PERFORMANCE CELEBRATING THE LIFE OF MONSIGNOR OSCAR ROMERO WITH COMPOSER CARLOS COLÓN-QUINTANA

North Texas Organizations Unite to Present the Music of Carlos Colón-Quintana

DALLAS, Texas February 19, 2010 – Composer Carlos Colón-Quintana will present a premiere of his newly revised and completed Requiem, Las Lamentaciones de Rufina Amaya and other sacred choral works in a free concert at Holy Trinity Catholic Church (3811 Oak Lawn Avenue) on March 20, 2010 at 6:30 p.m.

The first part of the concert will feature B.A.S.I.C., the Chamber Choir of Central United Methodist Church of Waco under the direction of Mrs. Karen Hogue. Mrs. Hogue will conduct a set that includes an original composition of Mr. Colón dedicated to all the priests assassinated during the Salvadoran conflict. Colón will conduct the second part including the North American premiere of his completed Requiem.

“This work of art is an outpouring of my devotion and admiration for all who suffered in the Salvadoran conflict including Rufina Amaya and Monsignor Oscar Romero,” said Colón. “The time I’ve spent on completing this choral work is but an instant considering we are 30 years after the untimely passing of Monsignor Romero. This Requiem is my humble way of continuing to remember this great man.”

This concert celebrates the life of Monsignor Oscar Romero who is being considered for sainthood and enjoying a country wide celebration in El Salvador to mark the 30th anniversary of his passing. It is an encore performance of the same concert given in El Salvador in early March at the invitation of The Cultural Patrimony Association of Santa Ana – APACULSA (Asociación Pro-Patrimonio Cultural de Santa Ana) – the charitable organization dedicated to preserving the Santa Ana Theater. This music festival celebrates the centenary of the Santa Ana Theater. They will be joined by several other invited local and foreign musicians.

This work specifically commemorates the Mozote Massacre of 1981 in El Salvador; it also honors Monsignor Oscar Romero who was assassinated shortly after delivering his final homily on March 24, 1980 and Rufina Amaya whose testimony as a survivor was instrumental in the United Nations’ investigation and exhumation of bodies buried at the site. Rufina Amaya died on March 6, 2007.

The concert is free and will be held in the main sanctuary of Holy Trinity Catholic Church located at 3811 Oak Lawn at the corners of Gilbert and Blackburn. There will be a meet and greet reception following the concert in Trinity Hall.

– More –
The concert is presented in cooperation with The Roman Catholic Diocese of Dallas, NPM Dallas Chapter, The Music Ministry of Holy Trinity Catholic Church, The Association of Salvadorian Americans and DFW International Community Alliance.
Haitian orphans (more info)

Anne Marie Weiss-Armush
DFW Interntional Community Alliance

Dear media friends:

It seems that the phone call we received regarding the urgent need for translators for a plane of Haitian orphans landing today may have been sent by an inexperienced intern. We apologize for any confusion her email (forwarded to you) may have caused and shall keep you informed if we hear further details. We do have a team of translators ready to help, should they be needed. We also can offer the media several new local Haitian contacts, including a physician and a businessman, should you wish some fresh voices about the situation.

WFAA has just shared this update with us, and we than them for the info:

"Pat Simmons, Regional Chief Operating Officer of the Chisholm Trail Red Cross Chapter in FW, says she is not aware of any flight coming in at this point. She says they have been apprised of "a potential" for humanitarian flights with Haitian children possibly coming into sites in Texas such as Fort Worth or Houston. But she says nothing has been solidified at this point. She says, if it does happen, the FW chapter of the Red Cross is available to assist. She says it may happen three days from or it may never happen. They are now aware of any flights coming in at this point, but they are in full standby mode, if needed.

JRB PAO also confirms nothing imminent. "

DFW International continues fundraising among the international communities, and we have agreed to try to rebuild one specific clinic in Port Au Prince.
